Coldplay members first met in one of London's University dormitories in 1996.
The first steps towards forming a musical ensemble were taken when Chris Martin and Jonny Buckland met, and this happened in the first week of school. The rest of the year was taken up with planning to form the band. The result was a boyband called Pectoralz.
The name Coldplay only appeared in 1998, when Tim Crompton, a friend from college, suggested the name to the band. He had already used it in his band, but disregarded it, as he found the name extremely depressing. The name comes from a book by Philip Horky, in which the first poem was called “Child's Play” and the last one, “Cold Reflections”. So, the title ended up being “Child's Reflections, Cold Play”.
Coldplay have become the biggest band on the planet by constantly challenging themselves and reinventing their sound, while delighting their millions of fans around the world. Coldplay has sold over 50 million records worldwide and won 7 Grammy Awards and 4 EMAS. From the beginning of their career, they dedicate 10% of their profits to social causes.
In 2011 Coldplay started the Mylo Xyloto Tour, where each of the fans who entered the show received a bracelet that glowed to the rhythm of the song called “Xyloband”. A show apart, so that the shows could be taken by the colorful immensity of the bracelets.
The band works in a democratic way. No member earns more than the others (except for jobs that don't involve the others). All profits are divided between them in equal shares.
